Title: English speakers' corner
Post by: nensi on February 11, 2008, 09:26:04 PM
I promissed to open the english topic for you.

Here we can just chat about the weather as English like to do or clear some language questions if you'd like it. Whatever.

That's all for today since one of the english proverbs says:

Early to bed and early to rise
makes a man
healthy, wealthy and wise.

Nighty. :-*

As far as now it's perfect.

The most important with languages in general is to start using them, no matter the mistakes we make or could make.
Slovenian people are often pre-occupied with concerns about making mistakes, but my experience with the foreigners is, they are more than happy to see us using their own language.

Think of it the other way:
I am proud I speak their language too, I speak it much better than they speak mine.

I completely agree with you! But since I hadn't travelled much in my childhood, I wasn't used to not understanding people when I visited a country (mainly because I only travelled to Italy). That is why I have to understand at least few words of a new language and I want to be independent.

But since I didn't travel much in my childhood

I can understand your reasons.
I started to learn French because I felt unhappy when I didn't understand a word of it when I was in Paris two years ago.  ;D

Wow, Nensi, you made me very happy by correcting my mistake.

I felt something was wrong and wanted to correct it as you did, but than I wasn't 100% sure, so I thought: Ah, Nensi will corect me If I made a mistake ( as you will probably have to do it again, since I am very bad with the IF clauses :P)

If I make a mistake, she will corret it.
If I made a mistake, she would correct it.
If I had made a mistake, she would have corrected me.

There are many types of if clauses, depending on the situation, these are some examples.

The best thing to practice languages is to talk, read a lot and watch TV.
In general the knowledge of different foreign languages in Slovenia is high compared to other countries. Luckily we didn't have money to synchronise the films so we can still listen to the original languages spoken in them.

Last year a friend of mine from Germany was staying at my place for 2 weeks and she said that this was the first time she heard the actual voice of some actors. :D What bothers me the most at dubbing is that the moving of the lips is not synchronised with the voice and that is why I rarely watch movies when they are dubbed.

Same here. I never watch movies on German channels. I just can't get over the fake voices ::)

Thanks for this, yes the dubbing is annoying me too.
Some 15 years ago there was a channel (I think sky movies) where you could listen to the original films with the subtitles on their teletext, this was perfect for learning. But they cancelled it for some licence problems if I remember correctly.

Thanks, Nensi (another mistake I was aware of :D )

I have no problems watching dubbed (?) movies. I have more probems watching Italian movies with the slovenian subtitles. I always read them and than think: Was that translation OK?  :D
